I say I only sip

To tell the truth

I tend to gulp

My addiction is stable -  or so I pretend.

Under its sway, I might misstep
overstating words of passion
I might even proclaim everlasting love to you
knowing that my arithmetic is faulty

I might seek to have you surround me in the everyday of life
whilst fearing I cannot travel this way again
I might just resign myself to fate
whatever it calls forth

Or I could surrender myself to substance
the midwife of an early demise
providing solace in solitude
however fleetingly.
